But, what hypnobirthing really is, is an all-round, comprehensive evidence-based childbirth education class that provides expecting parents with the knowledge, tools and support to have the positive and empowering birth experience that they truly deserve.
And whilst hypnosis has long been used as a relaxation tool to rid the mind of fear and anxiety, our hypnobirthing classes in Melbourne go much deeper and utilise a range of tools and techniques in conjunction with self-hypnosis to not only reduce any fear that may be surrounding your pregnancy and birth but to help your body labour with greater ease. Hypnobirthing classes and the techniques taught in them are used to help your body to not only drop into a deep state of relaxation but to allow your body to labour instinctively: as it was designed to do.
Hypnobirthing is about bringing birth back to basics and understanding how our body is designed to labour and birth. At Little Bird Flies you will learn a whole new world of natural, instinctive strength that will help you feel more empowered and confident. The magic of breathwork is one of many techniques explored in the Positive Birth program and I can’t wait to explore them with you. Many women and birth givers who aim to achieve an unmedicated birth look to hypnobirthing classes to help support this desire; and whilst we can not guarantee this, we do prepare you and your birth partner mentally, physically and spiritually for whatever pathway your birthing journey may take.
What is hypnobirthing?
Where do I even begin? You can take a look at one of our more detailed guides for the nitty gritty but ultimately you should know that it involves much more than a self-hypnosis class. It gives you the tools to strengthen a mind-body connection so that you can allow labour to progress with greater ease. Hypnobirthing Australia ™’s Positive Birth Program gives you and your birth partner all the knowledge to make safe and empowered choices for you and your baby. You will practise a number of techniques including breath work, deep relaxation techniques, massage, meditation and much more in efforts to reduce the fear often connected with childbirth.
How to learn the hypnobirthing method?
With Little Bird Flies, there are a couple ways to do this and all of them are all-embracing to your needs and limitations. Our in-person Positive Birth Course usually runs over two weeks on two consecutive Saturdays and Sundays or as a Workshop Weekend. Our online hypnobirthing classes run across 4 evenings of a month and whilst our online option popped up in response to the COIVD-19 pandemic, this option is sticking around due to its popularity!
You also have the option of completing the hypnobubs online class which allows you to learn the tools and techniques of Hypnobirthing at your own pace, whilst this is a much shorter course it is still jam packed with all the benefits of the in-person and live webinar Hypnobirthing Australia Positive Birth Course. This self-paced learning option can be paired with the popular once-off 90 minute or 3-hour private session with me in-person or over zoom. This session is tailored to your needs and desires and can be done further along in your pregnancy to refresh you and your birth partner on the key elements of how to utilise all your tools and techniques during labour.
Is hypnobirthing right for me?
As a midwife of 8 years, I can honestly tell you that Hypnobirthing is for everyone. It is one of the most comprehensive childbirth education classes I have come across and being Australian owned, the Hypnobirthing Australia ™ Positive Birth program has the added bonus of being specific to Australian parents’ needs. Of course, you’ll discover in your searches and website dives that there are many birthing classes that will teach you about breathing, relaxing, and coping with pain and all with their own different styles but, I have yet to come across a birthing method that is as comprehensive as Hypnobirthing Australia ™’s and that is why I started offering classes. At the heart of Hypnobirthing is a method that truly believes that all mums have the capacity to maintain a sense of peace through the intensity of birth. Hypnobirthing is about providing you with the knowledge, tools, techniques and support to have a positive and empowering birth experience no matter the circumstances.
When should you start practicing Hypnobirthing?
I generally suggest taking one of our hypnobirthing classes from anywhere between 20-32/34 weeks gestation; allowing you time to practice and take in all the knowledge, tools and techniques that you and your birth partner learn in class. In saying that, I have taught women who are 15 weeks pregnant and women who are 38/39 weeks pregnant and all of them have benefited from the Positive Birth course immensely in their own way.
Is Hypnobirthing Different from Lamaze?
Both Hypnobirthing and Lamaze focus on providing expecting parents with the knowledge, tools and techniques to labour with greater ease. Whilst Lamaze is an American childbirth education method Hypnobirthing Australia’s childbirth education classes have been created to the needs of expecting Australian parents and birth support partners.
Whilst both programs teach breathwork as an effective tool to move through labour they are both completely different styles. Hypnobirthing Australia ™ focuses on helping women drop into a state of deep relaxation with their breathwork so that they can reduce the amount of tension in their body. This method of breathing is more akin to the anatomy and physiology of labour and birth. Reducing tension is key to ensuring our body’s fight/flight system does not kick in and affect our ability to labour. Hypnobirthing also focuses on surrendering to the sensations of our labouring body over distraction techniques which are more commonly used in Lamaze teachings.
